Finally I can finish off the insulation and seal up the last of the vapour barrier. I’ve been waiting till the windows are installed so these bits can be finished off.
But first, I worked out how and what I’d use to baton out the walls. I had one length of 18mm ply left so that did nicely for one length. But without buying another whole sheet of ply, I only had medium offcut lengths left. To avoid a drive and wasting ply I cobbled something together, it will be fine.
I also glued in place 2 diagonal bits of wood in the hacked off corners of the window frame. This is so I have something to screw into when mounting the window blinds.
Then I got the last of the roof insulated and plastic-ed (which I guess I could have done before this) and then moved onto the walls. The electrical conduit pokes thru in a couple places so I can send it up to the roof. This took a bit of sculptural duct taping to make neat and sealed, but I was happy with it in the end. If in doubt, add more tape!
Of course that attitude slightly back fired because before I could cover all the areas I had insulated, I ran out of tape. So I focused on using up the last of the insulation. And of course this ran out before I could fill the last bits of the sliding door.
It’s so frustrating because I really don’t want to have to buy a whole new roll for the sake of 1m of insulation. But It’s gotta be done.
The same is true for the doors. The bit of ply i need will have to be 1300 wide by 1755 high. Neither of those dimensions fit the width of a std ply sheet, so it will have to be done in at least 2 parts. And because the smaller dimension (1300) is still more that the width of a std sheet (1220), it will have to come out of the length (2440) which means 2 full sheets will be needed wasting an incredible amount of ply. I’m going to have to come up with a better way because that’s very frustrating to me.
In a desperate attempt to finish something nice, I had put together a drawer box and brought it up to the van with some drawer slides. I spent a short while working out how to screw these in to get a flush finish. However, I’m not happy with screws as even small ones run the risk of poking thru and scratching anything the other side. Also, if i got smaller screws they would be so small and flimsy I don’t know if they would hold the weight long term. I’ll have to find a solution, but I’m pleased that dimensionally they fitted like a glove.
