DOACC: Bed Cabinets pt.1 – The Screwing & Glueing

Diary Of A Camper Conversion

Parts all prepared, today should just be putting them all together, right?

You’d think, but first I had to work out how to stand everything up in the correct place ready to be screwed. I ended up making some clamp on feet out of scrap bits which worked really well.

I marked up the back plate with the positions of the panels and then started gluing and screwing. I wanted to use the pocket hole screws. They have a smooth but if shaft that pulls the parts together, but they protrude, so I have to use standard chamfer headed wood screws.

It all came together bit by bit, but took all day because I was being really careful to make sure things were square and level.

I really wanted to keep the top edge free from fixings. But there was just no convenient way to fix it in place without screws. Just a few small screws doesn’t look so bad and they will be mostly covered by the bed panel anyway so it will be fine.

But by the end of the day, it was built. Soon we shall see if it fits.

Just before cleaning up I made the complex mount part. This is a crazy shape but it will position and reinforce the green side panels and electrical panels. It will also distribute the load when we climb into bed.
