No Puppy Paddling

Who’d have thought 3 pints after a hot walk would have been a bad idea? I had to admit that this morning I felt a little hung over, but it was worth it.

Rolling out today meant packing up our campsite and packing down the awning. Now knowing how it goes together really helped. The last minute purchase of a wind break also worked really well. It closed off one side of the camp from our neighbours and stopped footballs wandering into our area. Daito was on alert the whole weekend but the wind break helped narrow the area he was worried about.

Aimi had a random pin in her map of a quaint little Yorkshire town called Grassington. With not much idea why we would go there we set off. Turns out it’s a brilliant little summer spot! The river that runs through this tiny town has been mildly dammed up to create a millpond just before a small waterfall. Back in the day this no doubt ran a mill, but now it’s all houses and the millpond on the river is used for recreational bathing. Hundreds of families had flocked here to picnic and paddle in the river.

We had a wander around town first, picking up some lunch snacks and doggy ice-cream. I got myself an iced latte to try and fend off the hang over. The town was beautifully quaint with cobbled streets, stone built cottages everywhere all piled on top of each other and little pubs and cafes catering to the crowd.

And there was a bit of a crowd, this was a popular place! With our snacks in hand we found our way down to the river and lay out our picnic mats. It was lovely to have nothing more to do than just lay around in the sunny shade and chat.

But before long I was in the river. It was too hot to ignore the OH FUCK IT’S COLD water… I waded in slowly acclimatising myself but it’s hard to be graceful when it’s cold and your feet are being punctured by slippery rocks. I brought Daito with me. He was happy to paddle up to his belly but has never actually swam before. This was not an ideal place but it’s the first time I’ve been in the water with him so I gave it a go getting him to swim. He managed it, but was not happy about it and wanted out.

After collecting ice-cream for Aimi from the other side of the river, it mostly dribbled down my hands before I could deliver it. Licking up the chocolaty mess ended our day out as we had to drive home from here. It had been a really nice traditional bank holiday camping weekend. And now we had two knackered pups.
