Our first campervan night with Daito was actually great! Aimi was a little worried he wouldn’t settle, but the long drive was obviously tiring. He’s also got the hang of his bed under ours.
A couple weeks ago, I brought from the car the foam mattress we had in the boot for him. It’s only an inch thick, but gives some insulation to the floor. We put the blanket from his crate on there and so this has become his bed now. He takes the command “on your bed” and goes there, but at home he doesn’t stay on it. But in the van, it’s got a much colder and harder floor, so he really understood the difference. Now we are up in the first holiday home, it’s got hard floors throughout and he stayed on his bed all night! This was great as it means we can pick it up and bring it with us and he’s got a safe place from home on which to feel comfortable.
Today was another, albeit more scenic, day’s drive. Immediately we were on wiggly mountain roads and there was nothing for the dogs to do but lay in their beds. The perfect day for Kayto, but Daito was not used to it. For me and Aimi, we enjoyed driving campervan-slow thru Glen Coe looking up at the magnificent mountains. They were all surprisingly devoid of snow. I was convinced, this late in the year there would be at least a foot of snow covering everything but i was wrong.
Stopping at Fort William we stocked up on food as we didnt know how much of a shop we would find on Skye. I took this chance to take Daito for a decent town walk around the Fort and the supermarket bumping into an Australian and a couple of locals, one of which had 5 pure white Siberian Huskies. He was very friendly with Daito and I think because he was confident around such a big dog, Daito knew it and was also relaxed.
We stopped at a few spots for photos, but we were soon driving thru driving rain, so we didn’t stop much that afternoon. Aimi took over driving and, for the most part, I was not scared for my life. It was only the final 20 mins drive along the tiny single track road that had my sphincter feeling 50p/5p in fear…. It wasn’t that bad really, but the van was blowing around a lot.
After finding the croft I unloaded the van while Aimi set the fire. Before long, with spaghetti in our bellies, we were cuddled up on the sofa with a beer, some chocolate and a movie. Both dogs on their beds and a fire completed the perfect picture.
